Hi, I’m Charlie.
Back in 2022, I had a random shower thought that I just couldn’t shake:
“Did cavemen suffer from depression?”
To give you some context, I’ve lived with depression and anxiety for much of my adult life. After the pandemic, things hit an all-time low. Through periods of panic attacks and endless fatigue, I often wondered: if life was stripped back to its most primal form, would these struggles still exist? Or are they purely a modern creation – born out of social media, financial stress, and relentless societal expectations?
Three years later, I’m finally ready to explore this question. If our ancestors didn’t suffer from the same mental health battles, what can we learn from the way they lived? And if they did, what might that say about the roots of anxiety buried deep in our DNA?
The Journey
I live a completely normal life with a demanding job and modern routines, so I’m not about to throw away my phone and go live in a cave. But I want to see if changing the way I live can help pull me out of the modern rut.
Instead of doing an intense, strict experiment, I’m using this space to explore those pillars of a simpler life – food, movement, community, and the outdoors – to see what actually makes sense for us today.
Why the Animation?
To keep things lighthearted, visual, and fun, I started creating animated videos featuring two stick figures: Og (the Ancestor) and Bob (the Modern 9-to-5 Guy).
Through these animations and this blog, I want to take a closer look at the differences between Og’s world and Bob’s world. I’ll be sharing the interesting ideas I find, simple thoughts on nutrition and lifestyle, and looking into the big question together.
Ultimately, this whole thing is just an attempt to look at a simple question: is living like a caveman the cure for a modern world?
Whether you’re battling your own modern struggles or just love a good stick-figure cartoon, I’m glad you’re here.
